Sore Throat: Do I have one and when should I worry?

Sore Throats Causes & Symptoms

Sore Throat Causes & Symptoms: What is a Sore Throat and what causes one?

Sore Throat Causes & Symptoms: Sore throats are very common, and can affect people of all ages. A sore throat is a pain in the throat that feels scratchy and irritable, especially when one swallows. Suffering with a sore throat can cause considerable discomfort and disruption to one’s life, especially if you are busy working or looking after others. There are also different reasons for sore throats and getting a medical opinion can be useful to identify the need for further investigations or treatment.

What are common symptoms of a sore throat?

Most sore throats are caused by viral infections (like colds or flu) or from smoking. Some common symptoms of a sore throat include the following:

  • Pain or a scratchy sensation in the throat
  • Pain that worsens with swallowing or talking
  • Swollen, red tonsils
  • White patches or pus on your tonsils
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • A hoarse or muffled voice
  • swore, swollen glands in your neck or jaw

When to seek help

Sore throats can often be self managed without the use of antibiotics, however, there are several indicators that something else could be causing it. If you meet any of the below criteria (not exhaustive) you should consider seeking to make an appointment with one of our doctors for a consultation:

  • Fever of 38.0 and above
  • New lumps in the neck
  • White spots in the back of your throat when looking in a mirror
  • No coughing
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Feeling unwell in yourself i.e dizziness, nausea
  • If you suffer with chronic conditions
  • Taking prescribed medications
  • Any other concerns about the nature of the sore throat

Please note that in children and the elderly symptoms can be more vague and illness can progress more quickly.
