The importance of Health Checks

During the current pandemic many of us have been worrying about our health. Not only do we have Covid-19 to think about, but as lifestyles have adapted to lockdown we are drinking more, smoking more, and are becoming less active. Although we don't blame you, these lifestyle changes may be contributing to common health complications! These issues are not always lifestyle induced and can affect youin ways you don’t even feel or realise. At Qured, we highly recommend a Health Check. Now is a better time than ever to get insight into your health. A health check can help you understand your current state of health and highlight areas that may have been affected or may be vulnerable to Covid-19 and give you the information you need to achieve optimum health.
What are health checks and where can I get one?
General health checks, otherwise known as ‘Health MOTs’ or ‘Health Assessments’ involve a series of quick medical tests. These tests show you how susceptible you are to common health issues including heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease and stroke. Doctors often recommend general health checks in the UK as they often detect complications before the individual feels any symptoms. These checks screen for health issues in order to detect them before they can do any real damage. Health check sessions also provide valuable information about how to reduce your risk of these complications.
Full body health checks and health screenings will give you an overall view of your current health, where there are risks, and how to reduce them. These checks take into account all aspects of your life that may affect your susceptibility to certain complications, making general health checks far more accurate than individual tests.
It is common for sufferers of cardiovascular problems, kidney disease, stroke and diabetes to have very few symptoms prior to diagnosis. For example, cardiovascular issues are often considered ‘silent killers’. This is just one example of why we highly recommend getting health checks. To detect an issue in its early stages may mean the difference between a small problem and real long-term damage. Detecting issues earlier on also usually means that treatment is more likely to succeed and may be easier to treat.
These health issues can be detrimental, and often affect those who live healthier lifestyles. For example, the likelihood of you experiencing these complications can be increased by genetic factors. The risk factors for common health conditions are also often the same risk factors as other illnesses, including respiratory problems. It is worthwhile to get a health check in order to see if you have any unrealised pre-existing conditions. During the Covid-19/coronavirus pandemic, it may be beneficial to gauge if you have any of these conditions as they could make you more vulnerable to Covid-19 complications.
What does a Qured Health Check involve?
Our Health Check lasts around an hour. A Qured practitioner will visit your home to carry out a health screening and physical assessment, followed by blood tests to measure your body systems. You will be asked a series of questions about your family history and lifestyle. Physical measurements will be taken to calculate your weight, height, and BMI (body mass index). Then your blood will be taken and tested for the following:
- Full blood count
- Renal Profile
- Liver Function Test
- Thyroid Function Test
- Lipid Profile
If you’ve opted for our Enhanced Health Check, your blood will also be tested for:
- Bone Profile
- Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)
- Vitamin D
- Uric Acid
- Creatinine Kinase (CK)
In addition to these tests, you can choose an optional ECG as part of your home visit, which checks the function of your heart, which is reviewed by our cardiology team. We also offer an optional Covid-19 antibody test - so you can find out if you have had an immune response to Covid-19.
After these checks have been carried out, and the results have been processed, a Qured GP will call you to discuss your results, your current health and will provide you with personalised information on how to improve your health in the form of a Qured Health Check Management Plan. This information will tell you how to improve your overall general health, and will include realistic and achievable goals, tailored to you, be it improving your diet, increasing physical activity, or losing weight. You may also be recommended certain medications if need be.
We are also able to give antibody tests in the same sitting. If you suffer from Coronavirus related anxiety, having these checks may be beneficial for your mental wellbeing by putting your mind at ease a little.
