Why do I need a pre-departure test?
Under the UK government's rules for travellers arriving or returning to the UK, everybody must take a Covid-19 test no earlier than 72 hours before the start of their journey. Whether you're travelling to the UK from a green, amber or red list country, proof of a negative test is required.
Lateral flow testing is an established rapid diagnostic method to check for the presence of viral ‘antigens’ when a person has Covid-19. Lateral flow is useful for finding out if a person is currently infectious, and able to transmit the virus to others.
A lateral flow test kit is a small cassette which consists of a well for dispensing the sample and a window for reading results. The enclosed test strip will develop visible lines depending on the presence or absence of Covid-19.
A sample is taken from the back of the throat, around the tonsils and/or from the nose, using a swab.
The swab is then immersed into a chemical solution, which is dripped into the well of the lateral flow device. This solution produces a reaction with the test strip inside the device, creating a result. The results are available from the test device from 15-20 minutes after mixing the sample with the lateral flow test.
Qured only uses tests that have passed evaluation conducted by Public Health England. The manufacturers of the tests used by Qured states that these tests have a sensitivity, or true positive rate, of at least 96.4% and a specificity, or true negative rate, of at least 99.5%, when compared to PCR tests.
According to government guidance, lateral flow testing is useful for finding out if a person is infectious now and able to transmit the virus to others. The level of sensitivity is high enough to detect the vast majority of these cases. Lateral flow testing is less likely to return a positive result outside the infectious window.
Our tests are CE marked and registered with the MHRA.
Each country has different requirements for entry. Some accept only nucleic acid tests like PCR, others accept antigen tests including lateral flow tests meeting certain criteria. For UK entry the test must meet performance standards of ≥97% specificity, ≥80% sensitivity at viral loads above 100,000 copies/ml. These standards are also recommended by the World Health Organization, and have been accepted by several other countries including Germany and Italy. The LFD tests we use meet these UK and international standards. However, if you are planning to use our LFD test for Fit to Fly outbound travel, please check the test requirements of your destination country as regulations can change quickly.
We’ve made taking a professionally-administered lateral flow test at home safe, easy and reliable. You can order your test online and choose from a variety of delivery options. Once your kit has arrived, you’ll need to schedule a remote video call with one of our Health Advisors. On the day of your test, you’ll be given a link to join a virtual waiting room. The Health Advisor will start your call at your scheduled time and then walk you through taking a valid swab sample and processing your result. After 15 minutes you will need to take a clear picture of your result next to your photo ID and send it to email@example.com. You will then receive your verified result within an hour.
No, you must be supervised by our Health Advisor in order to take an accurate sample and receive a verified result. Qured reserves the right to refuse to validate your results if you have not followed these guidelines.
Unfortunately, you will not be able to use this service, as this product is designed to be led by a professional Health Advisor over a remote video call.
Antigen LFD tests detect a protein from the nucleocapsid (a membrane found inside the virus), whereas PCR detects RNA (the genetic material of the virus). PCR is highly sensitive and can detect very small amounts of RNA, even after the virus has been inactivated by the immune system (it can take weeks for viral RNA to degrade). This means that an individual can test positive by PCR even though they do not have a current infection.
LFD tests will only report a positive result if the test detects the target membrane protein of the virus. Therefore, LFD is better suited to identifying those who are currently infectious and most likely to spread the virus further. This can help to reduce the risk to others of exposure to Covid-19.
It is possible for PCR tests to remain positive for sometime after Covid-19 infection. Anyone who has previously received a positive test result for Covid-19 should only be re-tested within a 90-day period if they develop any new symptoms of Covid-19.
