Raising awareness for Ovarian Cancer awareness month: why early detection matters
Discover the importance of early detection and the symptoms to look out for
At Qured, we are deeply committed to supporting women’s health by providing accessible, high-quality health screenings. As we recognise Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month this March, it’s a powerful reminder of the importance of early detection and proactive health care, especially when it comes to cancers that often present with subtle or vague symptoms.
Ovarian cancer is often referred to as the “silent killer” because its early signs are easy to overlook or mistake for common digestive or urinary issues. In the UK, over 7,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year, making it the fifth most common cancer among women. Unfortunately, more than 4,000 women lose their lives to this disease annually, equating to 11 women every day. A significant concern is that two-thirds of these cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage (Stage III or IV), when the cancer has already spread and is more challenging to treat. However, early detection through regular health checks can significantly improve outcomes and save lives; if diagnosed at the earliest stage, 9 in 10 women will survive. (Target Ovarian Cancer, 2024)
Understanding the Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer
The symptoms of ovarian cancer can develop gradually and may not seem alarming at first. This is why it’s essential to recognise even the subtlest changes in your body and seek medical advice if you notice any of the following:
Persistent bloating: Unlike the temporary bloating from food or bowel movements (as seen with IBS), ovarian cancer-related bloating tends to be constant and doesn’t improve over time.
Frequent or urgent need to urinate: If you find yourself needing to go more often without an obvious cause like a urinary tract infection (UTI), it could be a sign of pressure from ovarian growths.
Lower abdominal or pelvic pain: A dull ache or a feeling of pressure on one or both sides of the pelvic area that isn’t related to your menstrual cycle can be a key warning sign.
Feeling full quickly or experiencing nausea after eating: If you notice a change in your appetite or feel discomfort shortly after meals, it could be linked to ovarian cancer.
Unexplained weight loss or menstrual changes: Though less common, sudden weight changes, altered bowel habits, pain during sexual intercourse, or irregular periods can also be red flags.
The Importance of Early Detection
Ovarian cancer is most treatable when diagnosed early, but because its symptoms are often mild or mistaken for other issues, many women are diagnosed at a later stage when the disease is more difficult to treat. This is why regular health screenings and open conversations with your GP about any changes in your body are critical.
At Qured, all our health screenings include a consultation for any abnormal results. This not only allows for early intervention but also helps identify other potential health concerns that might otherwise go unnoticed. Early conversations lead to early detection, and early detection saves lives.
Raising Awareness for Women’s Reproductive Health
While ovarian cancer is a major concern, it’s important to shine a light on other women’s reproductive health issues as well, including:
Cervical cancer: Regular cervical smear tests (Pap tests) and HPV vaccinations are highly effective in preventing cervical cancer. Early-stage cervical cancer often has no symptoms, which makes routine screening vital.
Endometrial (Uterine) cancer: Symptoms like abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, and unusual discharge should never be ignored. Early diagnosis of endometrial cancer is highly treatable with excellent outcomes.
Breast cancer: Regular breast exams and mammograms can help detect lumps or other changes that may signal breast cancer early. Self-exams are also a simple but powerful tool in early detection.
Endometriosis: While not cancerous, endometriosis can cause severe pain, heavy periods, and fertility issues. Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve quality of life.
Empowering Women Through Proactive Health Care
Investing in women’s health is not only about improving individual well-being, it’s also about creating a healthier, more productive workforce. At Qured, we work with businesses to provide corporate health screening services that empower women to take charge of their health. Proactive health assessments help identify issues early, improve health outcomes, and reduce the emotional and financial burden of late-stage diagnoses.
Kish, Qured’s Medical Director and NHS GP, reminds us:
“Symptoms of ovarian cancer can be vague and gradual, making early detection challenging. But recognising the warning signs and prioritising regular health checks can save lives.”
